Overview

Valuation of Fine Art and Antiques is a profession that requires specialist knowledge and skills. Valuers must undergo continuing professional development to ensure currency of knowledge and develop their expertise. This course is designed for those wishing to gain a preliminary understanding of the complexities involved in valuing items in this expansive field.

Regardless of learners’ prior experience, this course provides essential knowledge for effective valuation practice. Practising valuers will readily develop an appreciation of the diversity, complexity, and stimulation of this area.

The field of Fine Art and Antiques is an extremely broad area of interest incorporating paintings and other graphic and plastic arts, furniture and clocks, books and maps, glass and crystal, Asian arts and tribal art, silverware, musical instruments, toys and dolls, objects d’art and many other areas. Due to the extensive nature of the field, it is impossible to cover all categories. This course therefore aims to address some of the major categories likely to be encountered.

The course concentrates on the most common methodologies used in the valuation of Fine Art and Antiques, namely the sales comparison and cost approaches, and provides an overview of the basic identification factors and value determinants of the categories listed in modules 3-7.

The techniques and skills developed in this course can be applied to valuation of other areas, however valuers should seek to educate themselves and develop experience in their chosen areas of specialisation. This course is not intended to replace the experience gained by years of exposure to specific categories, close inspection and handling of items, and ongoing study.

It is recommended that students wishing to follow a career in valuation should have completed the AVAA Course Fundamentals of Valuing Goods and Chattels, Plant and Equipment. Students who have not completed this course may have trouble in understanding valuation terminology and applying methodology.
